Clifton The Area

One of the most beautiful and iconic areas in England, Clifton is bursting with energy, culture, entertainment and sophistication. Whether you're looking for trendy bars and boutique shops or historical landscapes teeming with culture.

The attractive suburb of Clifton is the oldest and most affluent area in Bristol, much of it having been built with profits from tobacco and the slave trade. Situated in the west of Bristol’s city centre, it was developed during the Georgian era and has many grand houses, that required many servants. The Clifton Hotels are listed Georgian buildings, which gives the hotels character and individuality. Berkeley Square, situated at the foot of the picturesque Brandon Hill, was built around 1790 and is an example of Georgian architecture. This peaceful, elegant square is the location of our flagship property, the Berkeley Square Hotel

Highlights of Clifton include Whiteladies Road, a bustling district of shops, bars and restaurants and Clifton Village, a Georgian shopping quarter full of upmarket, independent shops, which are a delight to explore. The Rodney Hotel is located in the heart of Clifton Village.

The Clifton Lido is another famous Bristol attraction and is located opposite the Clifton Hotel and the Washington Guesthouse. Built in 1850 then closed to the public in 1990, it was redeveloped and opened again to the public in November 2008.

At the top of Whiteladies Road is Dudham Down, which is an open grass area used for recreational purposes and Clifton Down, which is more wooded and adjacent to the gorge. Clifton is home to many exquisite and grand buildings including the University of Bristol, Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Roman Catholic Clifton Cathedral, Clifton College, Christ Church, Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital School, the Royal West of England Academy, the world famous Coronation Tap (Clifton’s original ciderhouse), BBC Bristol and Bristol Zoo.

Clifton is by far the most interesting and charming areas of Bristol. All four of our hotels are located in the Clifton area of Bristol within 5-10 minutes walk from each other, so if you're looking for somewhere to stay in Bristol look no further than the Clifton Hotels.
